Mixed media assemblage featuring a grid of confronting words overlaid on painted circuit boards, challenging cultural taboos and emotional avoidance.

Words With Friends – Barry™

Assemblage, 4’H x 4’W

In Words With Friends, Barry transforms a familiar game board into a quiet act of rebellion — a psychological minefield disguised in playful form.
What looks orderly at first glance quickly reveals itself as an invitation to discomfort, daring the viewer to confront the truths they’d rather not name.

About Words With Friends

Built from salvaged computer boards, thick layers of acrylic, and a meticulously constructed grid of charged words,
Words With Friends is not a puzzle to solve — it’s a trap to spring.

  • Overlapping terms like divorce, bisexual, envy, and pray surface not as statements, but as collisions — intersections we all recognize but rarely say aloud.

  • Circuit boards frame the emotional disconnect, suggesting how mechanized and routine even our deepest tensions have become.

  • Heavy, viscous brushstrokes interrupt the sterile grid, hinting at the volatile, repressed emotions roiling beneath sanitized language.

  • But unlike traditional protest art,
    Words With Friends doesn’t preach.
It simply waits — a silent provocation.

  • Your reaction — discomfort, anger, amusement, or indifference — becomes part of the work itself.

“I don’t apologize,” Barry says.
“I want someone to react.”

In this piece, saying nothing is a reaction too.
The words are already there.
It’s the viewer who’s exposed.
