Windmill – Barry™
Watercolor on stretched paper, 4’H x 3’W
Windmill began as a detour. Barry was headed to the beach to catch the sunset, but on a path he hadn’t taken before, he stumbled upon this remarkable view. The scene—a historic Dutch-style windmill surrounded by blooming gardens and manicured paths—felt like a hidden chapter of the park unfolding just for him. He never made it to the shore that evening. This was the moment worth holding onto.
The painting preserves not just the view, but a version of it that may no longer exist. Returning years later, the area no longer felt as cared for or as quietly magical. Windmill holds that one brilliant glimpse in place—the color, the light, the symmetry of planning and natural growth all working in harmony.
In the sky, Barry added something he’s seen many times yet still finds mysterious: the green flash. Some claim it’s an optical illusion caused by the sudden absence of red light at sunset. Others see it as a rare phenomenon, a kind of atmospheric punctuation mark. Barry has seen it even without staring into the sun beforehand—and here, he paints it not as science, but as memory. Something he knows he saw, something not captured by camera but brought back in paint.
