A large black-on-white painting of a tree with tangled roots, set against a dense forest and shadowed ground.

The Tree – Barry™

Watercolor on stretched paper, 4’H x 3’W

The Tree is a rare moment in the series—absent of color, yet overflowing with depth. It captures a giant tree rooted atop gentle hills, its massive trunk rising from a nest of tangled roots that ripple like waves across the earth. In the background, more trees stand in formation, their own roots hidden by a fallen trunk and a canopy so dense that little light escapes through the foliage above.

Unlike other pieces in this collection, Barry never returned to this painting to add color. It simply didn’t need it. The subtle wash, building out the shadows did the work of tone and temperature. It felt complete—as if the image wanted only to be seen, not interpreted.

Painted from memory and pencil sketch like the others in this series, The Tree represents the quiet power of observation. Sometimes color tells a story. Other times, the story lives in form, weight, and contrast.

This piece is available as a fine art giclée print upon request.
