Sweet Jesus Love – Barry™

Assemblage, 4’H x 8’W

Relics of memory, fragments of pop culture, and private artifacts collide in Sweet Jesus Love, forming a suspended altar of emotion and playful reverence. Each piece of the work offers a hint of story — but refuses to lock meaning into place, allowing viewers to construct their own connections in the space between object and memory.

About Sweet Jesus Love

At the heart of Sweet Jesus Love is a layering of intimate and iconic symbols:

  • A death card from Barry’s mother’s memorial floats gently above the word “Sweet,” offering a quiet nod to mortality and love without dictating a tone of grief.

  • A handmade Sculpey heart, gifted by Barry’s daughter, anchors the work in personal tenderness.

  • Catwoman and Julia Roberts emerge from a chaotic patchwork of Americana, backed by the absurdity of an Adam West Batman pot roast recipe.

  • The BodySound Chair, a technological invention Barry helped bring to life (and that appears in his novel Blue), stands as a literal and figurative seat of embodied experience.

  • Icons like the Tasmanian Devil and a dripping Beatles collage puncture any temptation to view the piece as simply solemn — humor and absurdity weave through every surface.

Though deeply personal in its construction, Sweet Jesus Love leaves space open for each viewer to find (or miss) its layers.
It exists less as an explanation, and more as a lived artifact: playful, mournful, irreverent, and real.
