Watercolor painting of the Golden Gate Park carousel, featuring intricately carved animals and ornate detailing.

Carousel – Barry™

Watercolor on stretched paper, 3’H x 4’W

Carousel captures the enchanting essence of the historic Golden Gate Park carousel, a masterpiece of early 20th-century craftsmanship. Built in 1914 by the renowned Herschell-Spillman Company of North Tonawanda, New York, this carousel is one of the few remaining examples of its kind.

Originally operating in Los Angeles, the carousel was showcased at the 1939 Golden Gate International Exposition on Treasure Island before finding its permanent home in Golden Gate Park in 1941.

What sets this carousel apart is its menagerie of 62 hand-carved animals, including horses, frogs, dogs, roosters, pigs, a dragon, and even a goat—each a testament to the artisans’ attention to detail and creativity.

In this watercolor, Barry focuses on the intricate details and whimsical characters that drew him to the carousel. The painting emphasizes the ornate carvings and vibrant colors, inviting viewers to experience the magic and nostalgia of this timeless attraction.

This piece is available as a fine art giclée print upon request.
